Human Genome Sciences rockets after systemic lupus drug Benlysta meets late stage trial goal
NEW YORK -- Human Genome Sciences Inc. said Monday its drug candidate Benlysta reduced the symptoms of lupus in a late stage clinical trial, and was more effective than a placebo.
The company said a combination of Benlysta and standard treatment was superior to standard treatment and a placebo in patients who have systemic lupus, an autoimmune disease. The trial compared Benlysta with standard treatment for 52 weeks. The results sent Human Genome Sciences stock surging in premarket trading, as the shares more than tripled to $10.35 from Friday's closing price of $3.32. The stock has ranged from 45 cents to $8 over the past year.
Among patients who received 1 mg of Benlysta for every kilogram of body weight, the company said 51.7 percent experienced a significant improvement. Of patients who took a larger dose, 10 mg per kilogram, 57.6 percent had a significant improvement. That compared with 43.6 percent for the placebo patients. The company also said patients who took Benlysta were able to take smaller doses of prednisone, a corticosteroid used to reduce inflammation.
In autoimmune diseases like lupus, the body's immune system attacks healthy tissue. Systemic lupus affects the internal organs, as compared to discoid lupus, which affects only the skin. Human Genome Sciences estimates there are 5 million lupus patients worldwide, and says Benlysta would be the first drug in decades approved for systemic lupus.
The Rockville, Md., company is developing the drug though a partnership with GlaxoSmithKline PLC of London.
The drug's chemical name is belimumab, and it was previously developed under the name LymphoStat-B.
Diet, nutrition and weight loss are probably the most often written and talked about subjects in the entire fitness industry. There seems to a new "plan" and "ground breaking" information all the time. But beware; topics that have so much information are bound to have a number of misconceptions based on half-truths with no scientific study to back them up.
1) Fat makes you fat, so avoid it. Wrong! fat is needed for absorption of nutrients and to help the proper functioning of many of your body stystems. Unused energy from food(carbohydrates) is what your body stores as fat, "fat is stored energy". ) You have to radically change your diet. With all the good basic health information available (i.e., avoid fried foods, go easy on the sugar, etc.) most people need to make only a few changes to achieve their weight loss goals.
3) Avoid any and all sweets until your goals are met. It's important to put yourself on an eating plan that you can live with. Human nature dictates that depriving yourself of foods you love can lead to bingeing. Give yourself one night a week to break all the rules.
4) Eating fewer meals will help you lose weight. Although this may seem logical, it's actually counter productive. Your body could go into a starvation mode due to a lack of food and can cause you to gain weight. Eating smaller, well-balanced meals (4-6 times a day) is the healthy solution.
5) If you eat a healthy diet, you'll lose weight. Close, a healthy diet is essential but controlling the order in which you consume carbohydrates will determine your weight loss. Eat complex, starchy carbs (bread, potatoes, pasta) earlier in the day when you are more active. Ease into simple carbs at night (vegetables, salad) when you won't need or use as much energy.

Metabolism is the set of chemical reactions that occur in living organisms in order to maintain life. These processes allow organisms to grow and reproduce, maintain their structures, and respond to their environments. Metabolism is usually divided into two categories. Catabolism breaks down organic matter, for example to harvest energy in cellular respiration. Anabolism, on the other hand, uses energy to construct components of cells such as proteins and nucleic acids.
A couple of pounds can change your life.
Lifting weights can help you age more slowly and gracefully and battle osteoporosis. Weights will improve your circulation; weights can make you stronger, healthier and happier; but perhaps most surprisingly, lifting weights can and will help you reach and maintain your weight goals by increasing your metabolism. The next time you head out for a walk around the Lake, stop off at the department store beforehand and pick yourself up a set or two of "Heavy Hand"-type weights. One set light enough to swing and pump along in your hands as you walk, another heavier set- or perhaps some light barbell weights- for some muscle- specific exercises another day.
Did you know that muscles are built by first breaking their tissue down? A body builder's bulging biceps were formed through repetitive cycles of breaking down old tissue and building new bigger and stronger muscles by working with very heavy weights. We will focus ourselves in our next column on more modest and sensible goals- stimulating muscle tissue in as many areas as possible. This will increase our metabolism as it burns calories, not just while we are exercising but also while our bodies rebuild that tissue!
In a culture obsessed with weight and weight loss, it can be difficult for women to achieve a healthy weight, especially when pregnant. Many women have heard the saying "eating for two" when it comes to diet during the nine months of pregnancy, but that isn't necessarily what should be happening. While a woman does require a higher caloric intake during pregnancy, that doesn't mean she can eat twice the amount of calories she would typically consume. It is important for a woman to maintain a healthy diet and monitor weight gain throughout her pregnancy.
"We typically recommend a 25- to 35-pound weight gain for women during pregnancy," says Blount Memorial obstetrician/gynecologist Dr. Patrick Morgan. He points out that recommendation is for a woman who is of average weight at the time of conception. "For women who are overweight, the suggested weight gain is much lower," he says. It is best for a woman to work closely with her doctor to determine a healthy range of weight gain during pregnancy. Overweight patients are at a much higher risk for developing dangerous complications during the course of their pregnancy. "They are more likely to have hypertension, pre-eclampsia and diabetes," says Morgan. It also puts the patient at a higher risk for a cesarean section. A woman who is overweight during pregnancy also can see complications in her child once the baby is delivered, which often is prematurely. "The infant may have trouble with blood sugar if his or her mother develops gestational diabetes," he says.
But Morgan urges that these complications don't mean an overweight woman should go on a diet once she learns she is expecting. "We do not recommend weight loss during pregnancy," he says. It is more important that a woman focus on eating healthy and exercising regularly. "Exercise is important for all pregnant women, regardless of their weight," says Morgan. A woman should talk with her physician before starting an exercise plan during pregnancy. Together, they can build a plan to maximize the benefits of exercise during pregnancy. In addition to exercise, a healthy diet is an important part of pregnancy. Dr. Morgan recommends women follow a balanced diet with special attention to moderate protein and fat intake. "Women should avoid fast foods and highly processed foods due to the high fat and sodium content of these foods," he adds. It also is recommended that women limit their fish intake, particularly tuna, to once or twice a week due to possible mercury content.
Once pregnancy has ended, a woman should plan on gradual weight loss. It took nine months to gain the weight, so it won't come off instantly. It is important for new moms to take care of themselves and pay attention to their diet. "Women need to return to a regular exercise routine as soon as they have recovered from delivery," says Morgan. Daily exercise combined with a sensible diet will help a woman return to a healthy weight following the birth of her baby.

A new study has found that family history of depression is an incredibly important factor in the severity and necessary treatment of this condition. The study ran for 30 years and followed nearly a thousand people from childhood to adulthood, watching for alcoholism, drug use and dependence, anxiety, and depression. Those with family history of these psychiatric conditions were more likely to develop these issues and to allow the conditions to cause relationship and work problems. A new study has discovered a link between depression and Parkinson?s disease. Patients with Parkinson?s disease were matched with control subjects to find the connection between the two conditions.
The study found that those who started taking antidepressants to combat the symptoms of depression were far more likely to develop the tremors and muscular rigidity associated with Parkinson?s, especially within the first two years of the antidepressant therapy. Therefore, patients who are suffering from a combination of depressive symptoms and movement difficulties should ask their doctor to check for the onset of Parkinson?s disease.
