Fancy Leafed Caladium

Fancy-leafed Caladium for Ruby Tuesday
(ka-LAY-dee-um)
Araceae (a-RAY-see-ee)
Synonyms: Angel Wings, Heart of Jesus

The Caladiums did very well this year. Enough so that I can see planting double or triple the amount next season. Keeping the animals from eating them is probably the hardest part of Caladium culture around here. After a bit of a rocky start the Caladiums in the garden really flourished despite a couple of dry spells. Mine were planted in a part shade location but these plants do well in full shade. Recently I have been seeing some planted in full sun. That seemed quite popular in North Carolina. That must require regular watering. We just treat them as annuals but you can dig and store the tubers. There are over 100 cultivars to choose from.

This Chrysanthemum (Chry. x morifolium) is named ?Jennifer? and I am including in this weeks Ruby Tuesday post because of the red in the center. It was hybridized by the Yoder Brothers in 1994 and is part of the Yoder's ProphetsŪ Series of mums. This was for sale at a local garden center. I was trying to determine the retail price of 8 inch Mums. The prices at three places varied from 4.99 to 7.99. You could get a small discount if you bought 10. It looked like everybody was overstocked.

The CDs have been piling up on the side of my desk waiting to be ripped into the computer. Some were bought through the BMG Club, others at a tag sale and somebody gave 4 or 5. Here is the list of what I got into Itunes during the weekend.

Beach Boys-Endless Summer
Blind Faith-Blind Faith
George Benson & Earl Klugh-Collaboration
Hanson-3 Car Garage: The Indie Recordings
JJ Cale-The Very Best of
Joan Baez-Greatest Hits
Kelly Clarkson-Thankful

Ronnie Milsap-Greatest Hits Vol. 2
Sammy Hagar-VOA

It is quite a mix of artists, I'll listen to just about anything. There are now 4500 songs in my library. I don?t think I am ever going to get to listen to all of them.

Thanks for visiting. For more Ruby Tuesday and red pictures visit the teach @

Chrysanthemum 'Gelati' and Juno the Puppy

Chrysanthemum 'Gelati' and Juno

After scouring the countryside for Chrysanthemums yesterday this was the only named variety I could find. All the rest of the mums were not labeled or had a generic tag. Many of the mums have gone by already but there are still a few that are coming out. ?Gelati? is considered an early bloomer even though this plant was just coming out.

This white mum was nice. I like the whites except they can look a little funny when they are past their prime. I will be heading out again today looking for some more mums. It is raining fairly hard here this morning but that is supposed to blow over.

Here a few more pictures of Juno. She is a great dog already. After Molly left us we were all in a state of shock and Juno really snapped us out of that. It is kind of like someone lit off one of those big mats of firecrackers in the house and they are still going off, which is okay as I like a bit of intensity from our dogs. She is growing up fast. The Black and White is the first D70s monochrome conversion I have posted on this site. I used the channel mixer to turn it into a B&W.

White New York Aster

New York Aster
Symphyotrichum novi-belgii 'Puff White'
(sim-fy-oh-TRY-kum) (NO-vee BEL-jee-eye)

The Asters continue to put on a good show and this time of year always finds me wishing I had planted more. This white one has been blooming for quite awhile. ?Puff White? is an improved version of ?White Swan?. Not having grown ?White Swan? before I am not sure how the two stack up against each other but ?Powder Puff? is a longer blooming Aster than most. It also stays fairly compact.

This flower used to be known as Aster novi-belgii and I am still getting used to the new genus name. Nothing like over complicating things.

It is suppose to be a nice weekend here and I am looking forward to try and get a few seasonal pictures. That probably means a couple pumpkin and mum photos. The color here in Connecticut is just starting with a few a trees starting to show their fall glory.

New Guinea Impatiens

New Guinea Impatiens
Impatiens x hybrida
(im-PAY-shuns)
Synonyms: Impatiens hawkeri

This picture is from work. The New Guineas did real well again. They were on drip irrigation and that seemed to be to their liking. I have been using Osmocote time released fertilizer when I plant annuals and it has been working great. Some annuals need another boost of fertilizer in the mid-season and for that I have been using Miracle-Gro liquid fertilizer. Sometimes that seems a little weak so I am going to have to put more Osmocote or try using a granular type for the second application.

New Guinea Impatiens were introduced to the market in the early 1970?s. Their wild success has spawned many new introductions since Longwood Gardens and the USDA collected the first plants. The original plants only vaguely resemble the large flowered and compact plants at the nursery today. One of the big differences between New Guinea Impatiens and the bedding type of Impatiens is the New Guinea type is grown from cuttings. Where the regular type of Impatiens is usually grown from seed. The New Guinea Impatiens are also a little more sun tolerant from my experience. I never plant them in full sun, however, that requires too much watering to keep them looking good all day.

These flowers do pretty well in the greenhouse and we usually take a couple indoors for the winter.
